I tend to photograph in outside settings with lots of colors and things going on in the background. For this type of a setting I suggest solid clothing with minimal pattern and stripes. Also, I am a big fan of layers, leggings, fun accessories.
However for field or nature type settings, bright bold colors and patterns are great!
Babies- Less is more. I prefer to shoot newborns in their birthday suits. Beanies and knit items look great as do headbands. For 3-9 months, bright colored diaper covers for boys and little tutus for girls look amazing.
Toddlers- Bright colors!
Kids- Bright colors. Solid polo shirts are great for little boys. Jumpers or cute dresses are great for girls. Also if the child has any cute head-gear (caps, headbands etc…)
For Families- If you want to match, I would suggest everyone to wear the same color shirts (white or black works best) with jeans, but not necessarily the same style of shirt. If you are cool with doing whatever, I’s wear a similar color scheme, but no one wearing the same color. Bright shirt colors are the best! This will give it a matching look, but still hip and trendy.
Seniors/Tweens- You don’t have to match anyone, lucky you! Embrace your style; you are most comfortable and will photograph the best when you are wearing your favourite outfit (you know, the one that you look great in). I love layers, scarves, hats, gloves (some of these are winter items…). Bright colors and patterns are great too. Feel free to bring props which show your personality: Guitar, baseball glove/bat, violin, books, letter jacket etc…
Engagements- Wear complimentary colors. This doesn’t mean you have to be super matchy. Lights and darks contrast well. I suggest bringing at least two outfits, one casual and one not so casual. I love bright colored clothing, but, sometimes it can be distracting if the background is also bright, so bring a mixture and as we switch locations you can switch outfits.
What not to wear…
There are a few things that don’t photograph well no matter the setting
-Plaid/Flannel/Check and paisley (I love plaids in person, but generally it does not photograph well)
-Poly-Cotton/Rayon Blend dress shirts- I don’t know what it is, but the rayon photographs weird and makes the shirt look shiny in some parts and not in others. 100% cotton is the way to go.
